There’s a New Kind of Spinal Fusion Surgery

I’m sure by now you all know that I’ve had spinal fusion surgery. I was on the fence about this newer surgery called minimally invasive. But now that I’ve had it all I can say is it was the best decision of my life.

My family and friends were the ones who assured me I had nothing to lose. And I just had the best feeling once I met the surgeon face to face at the Orthopedic Laser Spine center in Jersey.

It’s hard to believe that the pressure I’ve lived with for 26 yrs is all but gone. And half of the meds I have had to take to take just to get the edge off are gone too.

I can’t believe I’ve gone from seven Fentanyl pops a day to zero. Now I know my pain is never going to be totally gone. Besides the stenosis that was crushing my nerves I also live with something called Arachnoiditis, it’s a clumping of the nerves.

This was one thing that worried other surgeons I spoke too. In fact they told me not to have this surgery. They couldn’t understand how any surgeon could do a fusion and not touch my Arachnoiditis.

Minimally invasive is the way to go with something like this. The surgeon and his team of experts took all the precautions they could so that they didn’t disturb the Arachnoiditis. This is something that surgeons who do open back surgery need to understand before they try and discourage patients.

If my surgeon asked me too I would be a spokes person for minimally invasive surgery. And that’s because he has given me part of my life back.

With Minimally invasive surgery there is no cutting through muscles or nerves. There’s no five to seven days in the hospital. No physical therapy. And all the work is done through the two small incisions.

The day after surgery my surgeon told us that it wasn’t an easy surgery. And that I was a strong and brave woman to have lived with that kind of pain for so long. Then he said something that blew my mind.

If I hadn’t had this surgery I would have lost the use of my legs within two years. The stenosis in my spine caused by the bone spurs was closing. It would have completely closed without the surgery and that’s when I would have lost my legs.

I made the right choice. And having it done in Florida surely made a huge difference too. I was able to walk outside every day. I believe the warmth was just what I needed. My husband watched me like a hawk. He was afraid I would do too much. On the fifth day after surgery I started walking up and down the street.

Everyone who see’s me tells me I’m walking taller. I’m not hunched over or limping anymore. And that’s because that pain that caused so much pressure is gone. When the stenosis closes in on your spine canal you bend forward to ease it. I didn’t realize I did that.

I was promised fifty percent less pain and I’ve got that. Sure I still have to take pain meds. But I’m weaning off of them slowly.

Minimally invasive surgery is the way of the future. Why would anyone put themselves through open back surgery?

The one on one care you get at a surgical center is the way to go. Yes there is always the chance that something could go wrong. But that can happen in the hospital too.

In fact I got an infection when I had my first surgery (three level lumbar Laminectomy) in a hospital in 1989. That infection almost killed me. In fact I wanted to die. When you are having those kinds of spasms for five weeks straight you just want it to stop.

It took another five days in the hospital to stop those horrific spasms. And another five months to walk on my own. Along with two years of Physical therapy.

These are the kinds of things you don’t forget when told you need to have another spinal surgery.

Then when you are told that a surgeon can actually do a two level spinal fusion in about three and a half hours you don’t believe it. Or that you will be leaving the surgical center that same day. But you can’t help think about the possibilities.

Was I scared? You bet I was. But I had so much faith in my surgeon that I just had to give it a try. We met him here in New Jersey two months before the surgery.

Of course I did get sick from anesthesia. Then again I always get sick after any surgery. And it was my poor husband who had to watch me all night.

I don’t remember much of the next day. And that’s because I slept the entire ride home and into the night.

When I got up the next morning I could feel that the pressure was gone.

Life is good. I got to hug my Mom when I got back to Jersey.  I was so worried I would lose her while I was having surgery and recovering. We just had a nice Easter with my entire family. So all’s good on that front for now.

I’m six weeks in and I can’t wait to see how I’m going to be in five months. My hope is that I am off most of the medications I take. But then again I don’t really have a choice in this matter.

In Florida it doesn’t matter if you have a prescription from a legitimate doctor. The pharmacies are in charge of your pain. They decide who gets what pain meds. It’s horrible to think about the people in Florida who live with chronic pain. They are treated like drug addicts.

It’s one of the reasons I took the chance with this surgery.

But since I will never be out of pain completely I will have to do what other Floridians do. Yea you guessed it, Marijuana and wine, lol. When in Rome Right?

Just another reason why Marijuana needs to be made legal in every state. But that’s for another blog.

If you’re living with chronic back pain pick up the phone and call a surgeons who does minimally invasive surgery. You won’t be sorry you did. Thanks for listening.

What can I say I love My Mom. But I hate Cancer.

Mom’s the one woman in this world besides my sisters that will always have my back no matter what. She was nineteen when she gave birth to me. I’m the oldest daughter. I have two younger sisters and one brother whose the oldest of four.

Mom taught us all to treat others the way we want to be treated. That we need to never judge anyone by the color of their skin, or by how much money they have. I think we all turned out Ok. If nothing else we are a close-knit family.  Continue reading →

My lungs suck. No. Wait a minute. They don’t suck. That’s the problem–they don’t suck at all. They just sit there—in my chest cavity—taking up space. It’s cruddy. No kidding.

Complaining about it doesn’t make my rotten lungs any better, so I don’t do it . . . all the time. Not everyday, anyway.

Because of my nonfunctioning lungs, I have to wear supplemental oxygen all the time. That sucks. Really. I have a machine that sucks pure oxygen out of the air and pumps it into my lungs. It’s great to suck.

There are some days, however, that I wonder if it’s worth the hassle to even get out of bed. I’m serious. Getting out of bed means I have to breathe more. Then, when that happens, I have to get clean. Then I see pictures of my children, grandchildren, and get on my computer and see my friends…

So with all the preparation for the first party I decided to plan an party for all the other people I would love to meet in person. All those people that I talk to almost everyday. Some of these people I’ve talked to for years.

There’s my girls from Living despite pain group. We started this group a few years ago and we have five woman. Dar is the Canuck, Kaye is the English woman whose living in S. Korea. My English rose Alana along with Karen both from England of course. , And the baby Roisin from Ireland.  Sadly Aisling who was our koala just passed away. So for you Aisling Willow Cahill I say;  Merry meet, Merry part, and merry meet again.  I have no doubt that Ash as we called her will show up in some fashion.

Now for the rest. The Aussie Elizabeth will no doubt fly in for this festive party. And I’m sure she will bring some of that amazing coffee with her. I have no doubt DG will fly in from Arizona. Did I mention she’s an author whose also a Canuck who spends her winters state side. DG is the reason I started this party as she so wanted to crash the one in NYC, Lol.

My best friends Sherry and Deb will already be in Florida and they are always up for another party. I’m sure Genie will be there with Deb and of course she’s invited.

Now for the authors, LaRae is our Funny Crazy lady. Donalie is the mamma. Tre is one woman who needs some sunshine and party on the beach. Then there’s Marie, Jas, Janie, Anne, Regina, Augusta, Jane, Wendy, Vivi, CF, And Erin. Now I know for sure there are many others. But these are the women who are not afraid to talk about sex. Their not afraid to let their hair down. Oh and they can take a joke.

I do believe that meeting this group of amazing women face to face and putting them all together would enrich all our lives.  And I can’t wait to see what everyone will be wearing. Don’t forget to bring your sweaters as it just might get cool down by the water as the sun goes down.

This party is on Siesta Key beach in Florida. There’s a long table with white linen table clothes and china. Blue and yellow flowers in clear vases along with pink bougainvillea  are strewn about the table. White votive’s and large glass jars filled with sand each with one white large candle.  There’s even sea shells some holding the place cards in front of each place setting.

Close enough..

Close enough..

18d70ddfc6cab83b67d5381b376d10a7

Tinted blue Mason jars are the glasses I choose for this party. This way it doesn’t matter if you’re drinking from the huge pitchers of water with lemon slices or your favorite beverage of choice.  Oh and this is a BYOB dinner party. I will be sure to have a few bottle of Patron and a few bottles of Kinky pink along with assorted sodas, pineapple and orange juice, a cooler full of ice and two blenders for anyone who wants a margarita or wants to come up with a specialty drink for my party.

Ahh the food will be Prosciutto & mozzarella on brushetta. Grilled chicken with Italian seasoning, Tomato salad with fresh sharp Italian cheese and black olives a balsamic and olive oil dressing makes this perfect. Fresh green beans and asparagus seared to perfection with garlic and olive oil. And for dessert assorted pastries.

And as the sun goes down and we’ve all eaten we will sit around the fire pit and this is when the tequila comes out. Shots for everyone, even those who don’t drink would have at least one. We would need some entertainment so maybe this is where we let the guys come in. There always good for a few laughs. And who else is going to man the embers as we try and make smores.

Before the night is over I have one more surprise. I hand everyone a Chinese lantern. We would all make a wish then light and let them float out above the sea.

All in all it will be a great party with good food, and great friends and a lot of laughter. If you would like to come to this party just add your name in the comments and tell me what you think you can add to this party.

If I could really put this party together and one day I will I would love to see the pictures that will be taken that day and night. What a wonderful day it would be..

We always have room for interesting fun people who love to laugh. You need to have an open mind and a sexy side. Well DG that’s the party. Just pick out your beach outfit. Sandals are optional as we will have our feet in the sand that feels like baby powder. If I missed something or you have something to add feel free.

That’s my beach party and I’m sticking to it..Lol.. 🙂

DAILY PROMPT

Seat Guru

You get to plan a dinner party for 4-8 of your favorite writers/artists/musicians/other notable figures, whether dead or alive. Who do you seat next to whom in order to inspire the most fun evening?

It’s funny that this Daily Prompt came up. I have what I call the lunch table. I’ve always pictured a huge round table. It takes place at Carmines in NYC. And the people I would invite have changed over the years. But I do have a few that are always a constant. My husband Mike, he’s my best friend and how could I possibly go to a lunch like this without my best friend.

My Mom is going with me to meet all these interesting people. She can hold a conversation with anyone. And she would absolutely love this. Mom gets to sit next to whomever she wants. This is not a formal luncheon it’s a meal with friends.

Whoopie Goldberg is one woman that I have always admired and would love to meet. She’s honest, funny and she knows everyone.

Carole King is my all time favorite singer. Her Tapestry album has been the one constant in my CD collection. Anyone who can write lyrics like that is Ok in my book.

Now John Stewart is the guy who’s going to bring topics. He’s also the guy that will get the conversation going and there will never be any of that awkward silence.

Elton John, I love him. I just have a feeling he would wind up being the life of the party.

Sandra Bullock seems to be a very down to earth woman.  How much fun would it be if she just happened to bring Melissa McCarthy. Now that would be when my Mom would tell me, “Close your mouth Annie,” Lol..

Robin Williams is next on the list. I’ve often thought that he might take over and that no one else would be able to get a word in.  But then I think he might enjoy letting others lead for a change. And can you just imagine the laughter after a few drinks.

Meryle Streep, She’s from Jersey and to me that means she’s real. So why not have her at my luncheon. And she just might come.

Joan Cusack is one woman who loves to laugh. She’s a little quirky and to me these are the best people to have fun with. I’m a little quirky too and so Joan makes the cut.

And the last person at my luncheon would be Steve Madden. Yup the same Steve Madden that makes shoes. I’ve read his story and he seems like a down to earth kind of guy. He’s from Long Island and hey he might even bring us all goodie bags.

Like I said my table changes from time to time. I have had Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Jason Statham at my table if for nothing else they would be fun to look at.

Now I know this is make believe. But if this was actually about to happen who do you think would call or text last minute to say they weren’t coming. Of course they would apologize. And maybe even say they would make it up to me. But I’m a realist. And I wouldn’t be holding my breath.

The fact is not one person on this list besides my husband and Mom would actually show up to have lunch with me at Carmines in NYC. But that’s Ok. Because sitting with the two people who love me the most and eating amazing Italian food would really be all I need.

In Fact screw all these people strangers that are put on pedestals. I’m making a new list.

Mike, Mom, Michael & Loring, Jennifer & Harry, Tammy & Tom, Steven & Michael, Ralph & Irene,  Along with all my nieces and nephews is all I could ever want to have sitting around a table breaking bread with me. If I could add a couple other people I would add my two besties, Sherry, Deb and Mike.

You see when it comes down to it we all just want to be with the people who love us for who we are. If any of those people on that fictitious list actually said yes to my invite I would be a nervous wreck. And who wants odjetta before you eat one bite.

Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it..

DAILY PROMPT

Sudden Shifts

You’re at the beach with some friends and/or family, enjoying the sun, nibbling on some watermelon. All of a sudden, within seconds, the weather shifts and hale starts descending form the sky. Write a post about what happens next.

Ahh a day at the beach with family and friends. The weather was a perfect eighty nine degrees with a west wind. The wives and mom’s were sitting in their beach chairs with their feet in the water as the kids played with their Dad’s in the surf around them.

The rest of the guys were standing in the water drinking spiked beverages in their cups with straws as they talked guy talk.

Lunch time. The women decided to bring the children up on the warm sand. They dried them off one by one and sat them in a row on the blankets. It’s as if they are baby birds waiting for their moms to fetch them some worms.

Each child gets their choice of either tuna or peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a cool drink. The adults decide it’s time for some more adult fruit punch. Everyone is laughing and just enjoying the perfect day.

I stick my hand in the cooler and grab the container of cut up watermelon. As I  hand each child and adult male a triangle piece with a napkin the sun suddenly decides to hide behind a huge cloud.

I look at the rest of the women and say, “WTF.” The kids don’t care, they just continue eating their melon. Their content as each has the juice of the delectable fruit running down their mouth. The moms on the other hand decide it’s getting a little cool and rummage through their beach bags for cover-ups.

The guys think we are all over reacting. They give us ladies the weather report as they check their cell phones. My hubby says, “It’s just a huge cloud. You ladies need to chill out. The weather station says clear sky’s all day. Give it a few minutes and that cloud will pass.”

As the mom’s clean their children’s faces with baby wipes. We tell each other that the cell phone weather man isn’t always right. We agree that that cloud is about to break open.

Just then the wind picks up. And we each grab a child and huddle under the large umbrella.

The men are laughing at us. That’s when the sky opened up. Now it’s the ladies laughing as the men try to get under the umbrella with us. And for the next ten minutes the rain pours down all around us. Then came the golf ball sized hail that bounced off the umbrella and the sand.

People all over the were running for cover. Our men took video’s of the chaos that was happening all around us up and down the beach.

The kids were all in the safe arms of family and friends as we all huddled together under that extra large umbrella with the blankets wrapped around us all. The same umbrella that non of our men wanted to bring today.

It was fun listening and watching the kids faces. They got a kick out seeing all the people running, grabbing kids, towels and blankets. As we looked around the beach was now deserted. There were coolers, chairs, buckets and remnants of families that were just there a few minutes ago.

We were all warm, dry and making memories that would last us all a lifetime.

Then as fast as the hail wind and rain started it stopped. The dark cloud moved out to sea. The sun came back out and was shining just as brightly as it did before. It was as if nothing had happened. The beach filled up again.

We each ventured out from under that umbrella. I started to laugh as I looked at the men and said. “I bet the next time we say put the umbrella in the SUV we won’t hear a peep out of any of you.” The ladies laughed with me as the men grumbled and took the kids by the hands and headed back to the water.

All in all it was a perfect day at the beach with family and friends.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…

DAILY PROMPT

Gone with the Windfall

You just inherited $1,000,000 from an aunt you didn’t even know existed. What’s the first thing you buy (or otherwise use the money for)?

It’s June 8th 2014, Not sure if or when I’m going to post this one.

If and when I do it will be an easy one to answer.  I’d take care of my Mom.

My dad passed away suddenly four years ago. Mom and dad had a thirty five year love affair. They taught us how to treat our spouses. How to be kind to one another. And how to love with everything you’ve got.

This past winter mom finally got the courage to take off and go to Florida. She stayed with friends for three months. This was the first time she had ever done anything for herself in fifty two years. (My older brother is fifty two, my baby sister is thirty seven).

With no husband, children, grandchildren or great grandchildren to take care of Mom actually took time out to live her own life.

She learned to play Mexican dominoes, and Marbles. She drove a golf cart on her way to and from the pool every day. She did water aerobics three times a week with other seniors. And Mom made all kinds of friends, from all walks of life and she just had the time of her life.

When she got home all she wanted to do was to get back to her life and friends in Florida.

My mom hasn’t had an easy life. She had Rheumatic Fever as a child. Married an abusive man when she was still a teenager. Had two children fifteen months apart before the age of twenty.

She finally got the courage to leave my biological father with three children in tow, my sister was a month old when we left.

Then she found the love of her life and they had one more child to make that four all together. We lived a middle class life while mom raised four kids and did the very best she and my dad could. My dad was a trucker who hauled flammables for thirty five years. While mom drove a school bus she took care of all of us. Made us all a happy home.

When you are raised in a middle class family with four children its usually the mom that does without.

Fifteen years ago she went through a liver transplant.  It was a crazy time in all of our lives.  But together with the love of her family she made it though. We all thought we wouldn’t have to worry about her health again.

But Then my dad passed away suddenly four years ago. They had only been retired for 18 months.  We didn’t know if mom would ever snap out of that depression. So when she decided to take her friends up on their offer to spend three months with them in Florida we were all thrilled.

Then Three weeks ago she fell. My sister thought to be on the safe side she would take her for some ex-rays. The ex-rays showed a spot. Well that spot turned out to be Cancer.

So for two weeks she was stage one with two fractured ribs.  Then she just went through the final biopsy on her spine this past Friday. We all held our breath waiting for the results.

Yesterday we got those results. Stage four lung cancer that has spread to her spine. And now four fractured ribs. So you ask what would I do with all that money?

All she wants to do is get back to Florida. Once we figure out the radiation and chemo part of this horrible disease we just want mom to live her life any way she wants.

I would buy her that little home she wants.  In the Senior village she wants. Furnish this little home in the sunshine state. And let her live the rest of her life without having to worrying about money ever again.

Nothing else matters. Just when you think there are no more storms and only rainbows another storm rolls in. Another whack on the back of the head.  And this time we are all praying with heavy hearts that this woman who has always been there for us through thick and thin gets to live the rest of her life where she wants to live it.

This woman who has been through so many tuff times and somehow made it though. Who only deserves the best that life has to offer. This amazing mom, grandmother, wife and friend who would give the shirt off of her back to a stranger. Who has always put others first. My Mom deserves to live the rest of her life without worry.

Mom goes to church every week and believes that Jesus and God will help her through. I have my doubts as I write this. Where have Jesus and god been and where are they now. God supposedly helps those who help themselves. To me that says we are all on our own. And with all this family has been through time and time again we somehow have made it through but this time I’m scared.

Mom will turn seventy next month and she sure doesn’t look seventy. In fact you would never even know she was sick. I only hope she gets the chance to finally dance for herself.

I do believe that it was my dad who pushed her that day. Yes that may sound crazy to most but I believe that he is our angel and that he watches over us. Of course mom believes that it was Jesus himself that pushed her. At this point I won’t argue with her. But the rest of us believe it was dad too..

Money may not mean a lot to the people who have never had to worry about it. But to most it could mean the difference in a life full of hopes and dreams, or a life full of actually living out those hopes and dreams.

To my beautiful Mom I just want to say; It’s your turn to dance. You are loved more than you can imagine Mom. There’s no doubt that you’re surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Somehow together we will make it through this storm too. I wish with all my might that I could give you Mom the life you so deserve. I will find a way to get you to Florida. I’m not giving up just yet. You have a life to live.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it..

Update; Yesterday the 21st of June we had a celebration of my Mom’s life. It was a great day with family and close friends. She even got to meet her great grandson for the first time. It was a day full of laughter mixed with tears. Life can be cruel. My faith is dwindling. And I would scream if I thought it would help.

The Anti-rejection drugs Mom has had to take to keep her liver functioning seem to have let the Cancer do what it wants.

My mom starts Chemo and radiation tomorrow. If you can say one prayer for her I would appreciate it.. Thanks for reading my blog today..

DAILY PROMPT

Climate Control

The idea that the weather and people’s moods are connected is quite old. Do you agree? If yes, how does the weather affect your mood?

The weather affects my mood on a daily basis. When you live with the kind of chronic pain that I live with, spinal nerve pain the weather has a huge affect on your mood.

We have season’s here in Jersey. Winter is the worst as I become a prisoner in my own home. I might as well have a monitor on my ankle that goes off with a loud screeching siren as soon as I try and venture outside. Because that’s the way the pain is. It can really get to you after a while.

I really don’t have a choice anymore, I have to move as soon as possible to a warmer climate or I will go out of my mind one day.

Imagine a cool damp Spring

day. Yea for anyone it’s miserable. But for someone living with chronic pain here’s the scenario.

Imagine as soon as you step foot outside and a thousand bee’s swarm your numb (neuropathy) yes numb feet and start stinging you over and over again. As you do your best to move through that pain and not upset your spouse you realize that there are a few extra sharp knives now sticking into your spine.

The only way to cut the horrific pain in half and to adjust your mood and have a half way decent day is to get your ass back home and in the warm house.  From there you have to take some meds and put on another layer of warm clothing. Then get under the heating blanket and pray that the pain subsides to where you can get through the rest of the day.

Now that’s just a cool damp day.  That’s not the middle of winter in below zero temperatures. How do you think your mood would be after an hour of that kind of torcher.

Life isn’t fair, and I have family and friends that I love with all my heart and soul. I figure that if one of us has to go through this world of chronic pain it might as well be me. I couldn’t take it if I had to watch someone I love go through it.

That’s my story and i’m sticking to it. Annie
